最近因工作原因，和荷兰人的邮件来往比较多。不过直到今天才真正弄明白Holland和The netherlands的区别。通常我们会用Holland来表示荷兰（the Netherlands），其实这是不准确的。Holland仅仅是荷兰the Netherlands的核心区域（Holland包括North Holland and South Holland）。
因此，如果使用”Holland” 来代替 “the Netherlands” ，就如同用”England”来代替”United Kingdom”（”United Kingdom”还包括Scottish和Welsh）。很多荷兰人并不喜欢人们把”Holland” 当作 “the Netherlands”。
所以，如果我们用英语表示荷兰时，最好用”the Netherlands” ，而且“the”不可省略，正如”the United States of America”.
另外，英语中the Dutch表示一个荷兰人Dutch是指荷兰语.
